The National Road Heritage Trail Greenway System
The National Road Heritage Trail Greenway System is an
initiative created by the City of Terre Haute in 1996 through a
transportation enhancement grant from the Indiana Department of
Transportation for planning, design and construction of The National
Road Heritage Trail.
The National Road Heritage Trail Greenway
System celebrates the Historic National Road, the nation's first
federally-funded national highway as a national scenic byway and
an All-American Road, extending from Cumberland, Maryland to
Vandalia, Illinois.
The National Road Heritage Trail Greenway
System also supports local, state and national tourism, safe
routes to schools, and to promote alternative transportation in
conjunction with environmental stewardship, locally and across the
State of Indiana.
The National Road Heritage Trail Greenway System currently
encompasses the following corridors:
- The National Road Heritage Trail
- The Dobbs Park Trail
- The Historic Farringtons Grove Trail
- The Hulman Street Trail
- The Indiana Mile and 101 Trees of Indiana
- The Historic Ohio Boulevard corridor, and
- The National Scenic Byway Trail.
Future additions to The National Road Heritage Trail Greenway System
scheduled for construction include the following
corridors:
- The Brown Boulevard Trail - a safe routes to school corridor
extending from Terre Haute North High School to the Indiana State
University Stadium, the National Road Heritage Trail and the
Indiana Mile (Spring 2009).
- The Historic Collett Park Pathway - a safe routes to school
corridor extending from the Indiana State University campus
through the Union Hospital Health Group campus, conecting with Oubache
Elementary School and to Collett Park (Fall 2008).
- The Deming Park - Dobbs Park Trail - extending from Deming
Park in an easterly direction along the Poplar Street corridor and to
the center of Dobbs Park (Spring 2009).
- The Margaret Avenue Trail - a safe routes to school corridor
extending from U.S. 41 (3rd Street) in an easterly direction to 7th
Street as the first phase of a multi-phase corridor planned development
project (Spring 2009).
Expansions of The National Road Heritage Trail Greenway
System will be further documented with the impending
publication of The National Road Heritage Trail Greenway System
Plan scheduled for the Summer of 2008.
