Champions Plaza at 12 Points

Project Description

Champions Plaza at 12 Points is designed to celebrate the world-class accomplishments of Terre Haute's Olympic Gold Medal Champions. The concept for Champions Plaza at 12 Points developed from a meeting between Gary Fears (Wabash Valley Pizza Hut), Brian Miller (MillerWhite LLC) and Clyde Lovellette in 2006.  Mr. Lovellete noted that Terre Haute has only three Olympic Gold Medal champions and all three graduated from Garfield High School.  This elite group includes:

  • Clyde Lovellete, 1952 Basketball
  • Greg Bell, 1956 Long Jump
  • Terry Dishcinger, 1960 Basketball

Mr. Fears and Mr. Miller realized that recognition of these world-class athletes was long overdue. They identified 12 Points Park as an ideal location to honor the three Olympians given its location one block from the former Garfield High School site.

The City of Terre Haute adopted the Champions Plaza project with the initiation of concept development activities in the Spring of 2007, the dedication of a $60,000 funding budget in the Summer of 2007, and the advertisement for construction proposals in the fall of 2007. The Terre Haute Board of Public Works and Safety approved a low bid contract with Hank Metzger Landscape, Inc. in June 2008.
